A row of Kyo-machiya townhouses along a Kyoto street, their wooden lattice fronts and low tiled roofs running away down the pavement.

A three-room machiya in Nishijin

An old weavers' house on a quiet street, kept much as it was.

Nishijin wove silk for the court for five hundred years, and the houses here were built for it: long, narrow, dark at the front and open at the back, with a workshop where the loom stood and a garden behind to pull light and air through the whole length of the building.

Cadent House is one of them. We took the looms out and put beds in, and left almost everything else. The lattice front, the earthen passage, the stairs that are too steep, the persimmon tree that drops fruit on the stones in November.

Three rooms, or the whole house if you take it. We run it ourselves and take bookings directly, so there is nobody between you and us.
