Machiya Room
町家の間The front room, behind the lattice.
This was the room the house showed to the street: shallow, formal, screened by the wooden lattice that every weaver's house in Nishijin wore. In the afternoon the lattice throws lines across the tatami that move as the sun goes.
Six mats, a low table, a deep window seat. Futons are laid in the evening and put away in the morning, which is how the room stays a room rather than a bedroom.

Garden Twin
庭の間At the back, over the garden.
The quietest room in the house, facing the courtyard that pulls light down the length of the building. The persimmon is directly outside; in November it drops fruit on the stones and you hear it.
Western beds rather than futons, which guests staying more than two nights tend to prefer. The bathroom is yours but it is across the corridor, which is an honest inconvenience of a house built in 1912.

Whole House
一棟貸しThe entire machiya, with nobody else in it.
Both floors, both bathrooms, the kitchen, the earthen passage and the garden, with the front door locked behind you. Minimum two nights.
Families and small groups take this one. Past four people it works out cheaper than taking the rooms separately, and you get the kitchen, which in a city of small restaurants is more useful than it sounds.
